Statement

This project centers on “Involuntary Autobiographical Memories,” exploring their profound connection to individual emotional well-being, particularly as manifested in individuals with depression. Drawing inspiration from the layered visual language in Guillaume Apollinaire’s poetry and paintings, the work examines the role of personal memories, emotions, and mental states in art.

“Involuntary Autobiographical Memories” refers to memories that surface unconsciously, intricately linked to past emotions and personal goals, creating a psychological re-experiencing of the past. Through the repeated use of fragmented images and text, the work simulates the repetitive retrieval and suppression of memories experienced by individuals with depression, especially the cyclical recollection of traumatic events.

By visually exploring the interplay between memory and emotion, combined with a gamified narrative approach, the project seeks to challenge rigid internal thought patterns. It aims to prompt viewers to reconsider the complex relationships between memory, emotion, and identity.
