Bio

Mo Zhou is an artist currently pursuing an MFA in Art at California Institute of the Arts. Mo’s practice begins with subtle incongruities in everyday life. Through sculpture and installation, she explores the unstable relationships between bodies, objects, and social space: how objects guide movement, how environments shape habits of looking, and how seemingly personal judgments and choices are influenced by the things around us. Her attention extends from overlooked objects to the relationships that unfold through them, relationships that are taken for granted because they are so deeply embedded in everyday life. She works with the friction between materials to create a gap between established expectations and the actual experience of her work. In an increasingly smooth society, she wants to bring friction back, allowing familiar relationships to be felt anew and reexamined through moments of resistance and hesitation.
